The gods envy us
They envy us, because we are mortal, because any moment could be our last
Everything is more beautiful, because we’re doomed.
You will never be lovelier, than you are now.
We will never be here again.
Achilles, The Iliad
Many texts and stories tell us that humans are the ones, that are blessed. Blessed because we can die. Blessed because our material existence in this world, on this earth is limited. Blessed because, at the end of the day, we don’t need to do anything but die. Though a major part of humans is scared to die. Many stating that they haven’t lived yet, haven’t found a meaning yet.
What if I tell you that life doesn’t have a meaning. You don’t live for any particular reason. You can leave the world, just as you entered it. Without achieving anything. Without changing anything. But we feel overwhelmed, pressured to find meaning and in this desperation of searching and not finding, our lives become even more depressed than they already are right now.
Yes, religion even teaches us, that we are the most precious being that God created. But we simply aren’t. That we should be good on earth to have a good eternal after-life. Yet we keep trying to get into heaven, try so hard and pressure ourselves so much, that we lose focus on this current life. Our here and now. Life permits you to do anything, yet you chose to search for a meaning to get into a kingdom you don’t even know exists?
When you come into this world you aren’t obligated to do anything. You can choose to do good or choose to do bad. You are even given the power to destroy another human’s life. At the end of the day, you have the power over your life and how to impact it and you have the choice to impact the ones around you negatively and positively. I urge you to choose a positive impact.
I do not just urge you to do positive for your own, but also for others. People are dying because of hate, on borders, in seas amidst high waves and so many other places. People are dying because we don’t see them as who they are – as humans. It shouldn’t matter if you’re black or white, gay or straight, a Muslim or Christian, male, female, or anything in between, because you’re human.
You will never be here again. So choose to do good, choose to love. Choose to love the people around you and every second of this preciousness, that we call life. Do good not just because of love but because of humans. It’s so easy to forget that others too carry a bag of burden, that they carry a story with ups and downs. Make the meaning of your life to do good and to help and to love. Choose love because if there isn’t anything left. There will be love. There always will be and always was love.
