The coronavirus is now amidst us for almost a year. Longer than expected by most experts and politicians, who thought that it would be over by July or August. The numbers declined yes, but started skyrocketing again in autumn. The first lockdown was totally fine, most of the people were happy that they could stay at home for a few weeks. Spend time with their family, gardening, and activities like that and even though the lockdown was during the end of May, a positive attitude and trust towards politicians and experts were common. Though the attitude flipped at the beginning of the second lockdown with numbers at an all-time high. Being a politician in a leading position today can be hard, as it should be. They should be criticized for the missteps they’ve done and will do, as they currently neglect the youth.

School during a global can be seen in many different ways. Some say that home-schooling and distance learning are better and more comfortable for us students, some say that school should take place in the school building by any means. Caught in the crossfire of those two sides the general education of students is suffering. Suffering either from the lack of digital infrastructure or the stress that is going on besides school – the pandemic. That some people don’t have access to a laptop or computer they could study on properly is a serious problem, that’s not been tackled. Though some initiatives tried to help out here, they couldn’t solve this problem without the governments’ help.

As I said, students have a lot more going on than just school during the pandemic. Yes, there can be stressful situations even if you are at home pretty much all of the time. Having the virus itself or being in quarantine is pure stress. On top of that, we should not see anybody, that could help us with our problems. It all adds up together in a miserable situation, that is taking a toll on most of us. Not taking into account domestic abuse that might happen in some people’s homes.

But why is especially the younger generation victim of the virus and the restrictions of it? For me, being an 18-year-old student, many things are coming together during this time. Graduation and the final exams are upon me, getting examined if I am able enough for the military or not and then choosing what to do in the future, applying to universities and jobs, etc. Due to the coronavirus, those things are coming together in a short period of time. On top of those stressful situations, you have the restrictions for the virus. Though I am still lucky – my parents got to keep their jobs and we are all safe and healthy, so I can’t imagine the situation some families are in, when someone lost their job, got the virus, or even died from it.

Even though the pandemic is the dominating topic in the media, climate change and other issues haven’t just stopped. They are still progressing and we need to do something about that, for the sake of our future and the future of our children. Though these topics are being neglected drastically, these issues are still irrelevant to the majority of world-leaders. It isn’t an achievement that due to the virus restrictions CO2 emission are low, because as soon as it is possible to turn those factories up and running again, these emissions will be up again. The plans for building a sustainable economy after the pandemic are not even here, even though there is finally an ending insight.

Yes, the pandemic took a toll on all of us, and still is. But politicians all around the world are urged to act on expertise and experience. Because they will be held accountable for the mistakes they commit and right now it doesn’t seem too good for them, as they make their worst possible enemy. Gen Z.
